“Anyone who has read or heard of Allende knows immediately of his commitment to arts, literature, music, poetry and culture in general.”

Why Salvador Allende?

Allende was not only a political figure, the President of Chile, he was also a tireless fighter for Chilean's right to education and an unconditional supporter of cultural activity in its broadest expression.

In your opinion how does the local Latin American community benefit from the Festival?

This Festival has the potential of becoming a very broad, inclusive and multidisciplinary artistic voice for this community. There aren't many events of this stature during the year. The community has in this Festival an opportunity to participate in the many areas it is considering.

Doesn't the name and the principles of this Festival exclude some artists?

Not at all. Anyone who has read or heard of Allende knows immediately of his commitment to arts, literature, music, poetry and culture in general. His government, a democratically elected socialist government, promoted the most unique and broadest concept of democracy which included access to popular culture. During this period the levels of literacy, creative production and access to education reached the highest levels ever seen in Chile's history.

As we all know, this democratic and institutional government was betrayed and replaced by an illegal and unconstitutional fascist regime, with obvious consequences to Chile's cultural development.

To support and identify yourself with this Festival is to identify yourself with people's rights to democracy, people's rights to culture and education. It is very hard to find artists who do not identify themselves with these principles.
